How To Make an Herbal Tonic Elixir – Delicious Recipe!

How to make an Herbal Tonic Elixir – Vanilla Cream Dragon Tonic

In this article I will share about tonic herbs, the best herbal tea ever, and how to make an herbal tonic elixir. A super potent and tasty herbal tonic elixir at that!

The number one way I have found to get a host of superfoods, herbs, healthy fats, and minerals into one meal is consciously combining them all into one drink. An Elixir is described as a medicinal beverage sweetened to taste good! The Websters Dictionary defines ‘tonic’ as a medicine that invigorates or strengthens. A Tonic herb is a herb that is historically and scientifically known to have positive effects on our bodies in the short-term and over a life time. Tonic herbs positively boost and regulate immune functions, tonify and optimize the organs, increase healthy circulation, strengthen the body, and positively benefit our mood.

A little background: The study of tonic herbs go back thousands of years. There are around twenty to thirty known tonic herbs that are classed in this special area of herbal pharmacopoeia. There are many wonderfully powerful herbs on our great earth that are not classed as tonic herbs. These herbs are mostly allopathic herbs. Meaning they have great effect on certain conditions of the body but are not safe to take long-term over the course of ones life. For instance Garlic, Echinacea, and Goldenseal, are powerful herbs to take if one is sick and needs to cut through a cold. However they will negatively affect the immune system if taken every day for extended amounts of time. These herbs also do not come close in comparison to tonic herbs when it comes to positively effecting the rest of the biology of the body. Other herbs are for flavor and/or nutrition and are amazing for individual uses but tonic herbs hold a very special place amongst renown herbalists, ancient herbal traditions, and are truly set apart in the world of herbs.

I started learning about and taking Chinese and Ayurvedic tonic herbs a number of years ago when beginning my health and healing journey. I believe Tonic herbs truly changed my life, my mind, my body, my energy, and awakened levels of my spirit that were not yet awakened. The learning, and the experimenting with concoctions, elixirs, tinctures, creams, foods, and herbal combinations have continued to this day ever since FELT the positive difference they had on me, friends, and family.

Elixir Strategy: A successful potent, consciously made, great tasting, effective Tonic elixir with a full body(not watery, not grainy or chunky) must include key ingredients to achieve. At minimum this includes some sort of herbal liquid base(tea), Powdered Tonic herbs, a healthy fat, and a healthy sweetener.

Over the years I have made hundreds of herbal tonic elixirs. This Vanilla Cream Dragon Tonic Elixir that I made this morning is with some of my favorite herbs and ingredients! Please don’t split hairs on measurements. This recipe is intended to act as structure for any kind of elixir. So feel free to experiment with your elixir creations and explore these amazing herbs.

Vanilla Cream Dragon Tonic!

Liquid Base: Dragon Herbs Spring Dragon Longevity Tea. This is by far my favorite bagged tea ever. Developed by Master herbalist Ron Teagarden at Dragon Herbs. It is jammed pack with 6 amazing super potent tonic herbs that tastes great together.

Spring Dragon Longevity tea is the dried leafs of natural, spring water fed, mountain grown Gynnostemma, infused with the extracts of 5 of the top tonic herbs in the world; Astragalus, Goji berry, Schizandra, Lou Han Guo, and Siberian Ginseng. Please see the breakdown of the amazing benefits of these herbs on my review of Spring Dragon Longevity Tea in my other blog post HERE.

STEP 1) STEEP TEA: Pour hot (spring or Filtered) water over one Tea bag, cover and let sit for 5-7 minutes. 8-10 oz.

While steeping tea. Grab other ingredients and begin to add to dry/empty blender…

STEP 2) Add Lipids/Healthy FAT: Coconut Oil 1TB:  Along with the crucial health benefits of healthy fats this ingredient is what makes elixirs have that creamy full body taste. In this recipe I am using raw/unfiltered organic coconut oil..

*Coconut oil is a medium chain fatty acid high in saturated healthy fat. It helps increase healthy cholesterol. It is an anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory oil, classified as a superfood among health enthusiast. (Make sure you are using organic and unfiltered or raw coconut oil in glass). It is great for the cardiovascular system and overall gut health as it helps ward off candida. It protects the heart and the liver. Coconut oil is great for the brain, is a great source of energy and is much easier to digest than most all other oils. Coconut oil has been scientifically proven to help memory, improve type II diabetes, aid in weight loss, aid in muscle mass, prevent tooth and gum decay, improve digestion, heal ulcers and skin problems, prevent osteoporosis, and balance hormones.

There are many great organic and raw/unfiltered Coconut oils on the shelves these days. I personally like Dr. Bronners Organic Unfiltered Coconut oil because it is super high quality oil in glass and as a company they set themselves apart with extremely high standards in green Eco-friendly, health conscious products, as well as conscious business ethics.

NOTE: If you only added in one of these Ingredients listed below you will most certainly notice a positive difference! If you even just drink the Longevity Tea only. That is how powerful tonic herbs and high-grade mineral supplements are.  The beauty of elixirs is that you can combine many into one drink and cover a wider spectrum of healing and reap many more health benefits while truly enjoying an amazing beverage. I have included some of the known benefits of each these herbs with this recipe. So it has become quite a lengthy post. I hope this inspires you to make your own herbal tonic elixirs and do further research into theses amazing plants. Please note my descriptions just scratches the surface of these ancient herbs. The history, lure, alchemy, and science behind each one of these herbs is very extensive and goes very deep! I’m just attempting to give a summary for you to get intrigued while sharing one of my favorite recipes.

Shilajit 1/2 tsp-1tsp * Shilajit is regarded by many herbalists as the most important natural tonic substance of Ayurveda (the traditional Indian health care system). In Sanskrit, Shilajit means “conqueror of mountains and destroyer of weakness.” Shilajit is a very complex natural substance aiding in almost all functions of the body. It known for boosting the immune system, overall strengthening, boosting nutrient and mineral absorption, promoting circulation, detoxicification especially of heavy metals, supporting menstrual, urinary and lung functions. My favorite Shilajit is by Omica Organics available on Amazon. Super dark, smokey, earthy, potent flavor. It the best I have come across.  The only other Shilajit I would buy is from Dragon Herbs. If you do not like the flavor of shilajit (in water that is, it will taste great in this elixir!) Then you may want to try the Dragon Herbs Shilajit since it is in capsules.

Mucuna Pruriens: 1/2 tsp – 1tsp *Mucuna is a renowned Ayurvedic Tonic Herb. Known traditionally for its strengthening and tonifying actions. Modern science has found that Mucuna has very high amounts of compound called L-DOPA. Which is a precursor to dopamine. Dopamine works as one of the best natural hgh releasers (human growth hormone) by stimulating the pituitary gland to optimize it’s natural production. My experience with Mucuna is that it gives me a state of feeling blissful and strong. I get Mucuna from EarthShift Products. I believe they just started selling tthier Mucuna on Amazon here: Ojio Mucuna. You can also view Dr. Robert Cassar’s webiste at

Ashwaganda: 1/2tsp – 1tsp *Another renowned prized Ayurvedic tonic herb. Also known as Indian Ginseng. With a vast range of health benefits. it very high is antioxidants, research shows it helps fight cancer and diabetes. Ashwaganda reduces inflammation, arthritis, stress, asthma, hypertension, and physical fatigue. Widely seen as an overall energizer for both men and women. I also get Ashwaganda from EarthShift Products at

Pine Pollen Extract 1-2 droppers full. *Pine Pollen extract is not officially a tonic herb but is a powerhouse of nutrition and energy! It has been used for thousands of years by chinese and korean cultures. Pine pollen has over 200 bioactive nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. Pine Pollen is a complete protein believe it or not and when extracted into alcohol as a tincture it has androgenic properties that boost natural testosterone and balance hormones in men and women. I actually make it a point forge for wild pine pollen in the spring and make my own tinctures. When I do purchase pine Pollen I only buy from Surthrival They have an extraordinary pine pollen product called Surthrival ‘Pure Potency’ Pine Pine Pollen. They are an industry leader in Pine pollen extracts and other high performance herbal products.

My Community Mushroom Blend 4-6 opened veggie caps. *Mushrooms are not herbs at all yet they are typically indexed as one. In short, each medicinal mushroom has a spectrum of health benefits. Some mushrooms like Reishi and Cordycepts are classed among the highest of the Chinese tonic herbs for thier healing properties. Mushrooms educate the white blood cells and vastly improve our immunological functions through beta glucans, polysaccharides, and many other naturally occurring compounds. They in turn fight cancer, inflammation, aid in overall cell health, help with memory, cleanse the blood and so on. Paul Stamets is the leading Mushroom researcher, writer, and formulater in the world. He has developed the worlds leading mushroom complex brand called ‘Host Defense.’ They are specially formulated combinations for various ailments or outcomes. I chose to use Comprehensive Immunity Support in this elixir. It is blend of a whopping 17 different mushrooms for improving the overall immune system. I notice a drop in stress when taking this product alone. Truly an amazing product for preventing and overcoming sicknesses or drop offs in immunity.

Fulvic Acid: 6-12 drops. * Fulvic Acid in not an herb. It is a highly praised natural liquid acid made from the soil of prehistoric plant matter. “It is said to be the most bio-available transferable natural material in the world, and is absorbed and utilized by the body and cells more rapidly and effectively–while containing greater benefits–than any man-made or other “natural” or “Fulvic” mineral varieties. mineral made from the Humic Acid(such as shilajit listed above) and Fulvic Acid work together to remove unwanted salt acids that surround & harden cell walls, creating cell permeability. Fulvic Acid is the electrolyte that enables our cells to absorb nutrients and is a multi-directional antioxidant. Fulvic and Humic Acid, Trace Minerals & Essential Amino Acids are required for a myriad of metabolic functions, yet cannot be produced by the body.”  -Dr Rober Cassar

Detoxifies the body by eliminating heavy metals and toxins (including radiation) and is considered the most powerful form of Oral Chelation

Allows other foods, vitamins, and herbs to be absorbed and effectively utilized by the body

Provides increased energy, mental clarity, and sense of well-being by feeding and nourishing every cell in the body

I get Organic Fulvic Acid from Dr Robert Cassar at with great results. However there is another product called Fulvic Ionic Minerals by Optimally Organic with tremendous reviews that I am looking at trying next.

  1. Raw Organic Honey: 1tsp
  2. Vanilla Stevia drops: About 5 drops
  3. Organic Cinnamon: 1/4 tsp

*I like to mix Stevia in with whatever sweetener I am using. It reduces the sugar in the elixir since Stevia has zero calories with no sugar. I also find it rounds out the overall taste.

STEP 5) BLEND: Once all of the ingredients are in the blender, add the hot tea and blend on high for 20-30 seconds and that’s it! ready to drink.

I recommend drinking it warm and over the course of 10 minutes or longer for maximum absorption/digestion.

Thank you for taking the time to read this lengthy recipe! I hope this has benefited you and please let me know if you try this or a similar elixir! feel free to leave feedback, comments, or questions.

To your health and happiness!
